夏天到了，人們走進了游泳館。有人的地方就有江湖，有江湖的地方就要一決高下。有人就想出了比誰憋氣憋得久這個遊戲，一分鐘、一分半，甚至兩分鐘的巨肺也偶有。游泳的和跳水的都來參加，蹲在水面以下看誰憋得久。可你知道這麼做會導致憋氣者昏厥，甚至溺水死亡么?

25歲的Whitner Milner經過訓練能憋住呼吸三分鐘，平時喜歡玩休閑潛水和魚叉捕魚的他在2011年4月16日一個人在家裡的游泳池裡，第二天晚上他媽媽發現兒子死在游泳池裡，依然保持著憋氣的姿勢——一隻手抱胸，另一隻放在喉部。

驗屍官認為憋氣造成的黑視(blackout)很可能是造成他溺亡的原因。美國疾病控制和預防中心今年5月22日發布的報告中記錄了1988年-2011年在紐約發生的16次淺水黑視，其中4人死亡。

Whitner的母親Rhonda Milner自己也是醫生，她說水下憋氣表面上看似無害，受害者也不知道自己即將出現黑視，一切來的毫無徵兆。

美國疾控和預防中心報告的首席作者Christopher Boyd說只有人體內的二氧化碳水平超過了臨界點，人體才開始產生對新鮮空氣的需求。一般在進行憋氣之前，人往往會深呼吸，深呼吸排除體內的二氧化碳，抑制呼吸衝動。

但體內的氧氣含量已經低到讓人昏厥，但是二氧化碳水平還不足以讓人體產生呼吸信號。人還沒有意識到要換氣，就已經昏了過去。對於以游泳為鍛煉手段需要耗費更多氧氣的人，或者長時間待在水下的人來說相當危險。

由於此時人已經昏了過去，也沒有表現出掙扎，同伴或者救生員也意識不到出了危險。用Rhonda的話來說，一切發生的是那麼安靜，根本察覺不到。
